Day 21- Driving over the Rockies to Moab, UT

Leaving the Rockies
Another long, busy and fun day in the land of the traveling Smiths!  We left Denver at about 9am after a nice breakfast with Adam.  Moab is pretty much a straight shot from Denver taking 70 west all the way over the Rocky Mountains.  At one point we read a sign that said we were at almost 10,000 ft!  It felt like a straight climb up and then a straight drive down over many of the peaks.  At one point the road took us along the bottom of a canyon.  The scenery was spectacular. We noticed that at some point along our travels the vegetation changed and we were once again among dusty, sandy, sage brush covered terrain.
After 6 hours of driving we arrived in Moab at around 3 pm.  We stopped for gas once and to get drinks and use the restrooms once.  Not bad with two kids!  They are becoming professional travelers.

The first place we went when we got to the campground was right to my parent's site.  We were all excited to see one another and it was good to escape from the car into the RV for a visit.  We shared some of our adventures, showed pictures, and just visited.  After a bit, Len and I went to set up our tent and get things organized.  My dad took Douglas to the pool for a swim and Duncan and Grammie played a game of rummy.  To our surprise my parents had bought a Vinnie's special pizza and froze it!  Who knew we'd be eating Vinnie's Pizza in Utah this summer! After dinner we went out for a ride.  We tried to stop by the Ranger Station to get the info for the kid's next Ranger badge but it had closed.  We decided to go for a short ride to get the lay of the land.  The rock formations are amazing out here.  There are so many individual, huge rocks that look like they are barely balancing on the edge of a grand cliff.  We drove by an enormous sand dune of red sand that some kids were attempting to climb.  Both boys immediately said they wanted to try climbing it.  So after our ride we stopped at the dunes to let them give it a try.  They both made it to the top. I bet the dune stretched upwards of 150 yards. It was really steep and they were both huffing and puffing when they got down.  They want to do it again tomorrow with Len.  He says he is going to give it a try!
Look carefully! Dunc and Doug are halfway up the huge sand dune!
Our tent seems like a spacious cabin tonight.  We only had to set up one mattress, two bags of clothes, and non of our cooking stuff!  As predicted, the boys are in the RV with my parents. Although they were excited to see Grammie & Bampie and to have climbed the sand dune, I know they are exhausted and will fall asleep the second their heads hit the pillows!  Tomorrow we are off to explore and learn about Arches National Park!
