Day 19 Driving to Denver, CO

Bull elk
Today was a long day, but successful nonetheless.  We left our cabin in the Tetons and headed to Denver, CO to spend some time with our nephew, Adam.  We had to travel roughly 425 miles to get here.  Adam was actually home on the east coast for the past week.  His flight arrived back in Denver at 6 this evening. Knowing that we didn't need to arrive before 6, we took it easy this morning.  Len got up and did two loads of laundry.  I was able to organize each of the kid's bags and repack all of the swimming gear.
The activities of the past few days caught up to Douglas!
The drive was long but very scenic.  Although Denver is considered "the mile high" city, we feel like we have left the mountains.  Both Yellowstone and the Tetons are at about 7500 ft so we have come down to around 5200 feet!  Although there is a lot of open space along the way, the  vegetation is quite different.  We no longer see fields of sage brush with pronghorn scattered throughout.  We now see fields of corn and wheat with huge harvesters running through them.  We have also entered into an area where the animals are fenced in and being raised for food.  We passed buffalo ranches and pastures full of horses and cows.  We did manage to see three huge bull elk eating on the side of the road.
We finally arrived in Denver at around 8 pm.  Adam's loft is just great.  It is in an old mill building so it has some brick walls with some of the old words painted on it.  The place has so much character.  Once we lugged all of our bags upstairs, we headed out for some dinner.  The kids really wanted pizza so we ended up at a place called the Mello Mushroom.  It had a fun atmosphere and excellent pizza.  We walked down a street that actually is home to the "mile long mall."  The only traffic allowed on the street are the busses specifically for the shoppers.  The busses are free of charge and run all day long. The city is very clean and is full of walking and biking trails.  Tomorrow we'll head out to explore a bit more with Adam.
